    From wikipedia.org, here's your earliest date. Could well be a gift item associated with the renaming.

    "In 1983, under the policy of Central People's Government to develop the college quickly and make it the center of politics and law education in China, BCPSL was renamed as the China University of Political Science and Law."

    How do you know the box and the fabric go together? Maybe the box was just a convenient size for storage. Is the fabric printed? It looks like there's writing at the top and bottom. Can you show those details?

    I can take a better photo tomorrow but the writing matches what is written on the box.

    Yes, but I wondered more about the reason it has the University details, there are versions with no wording, it may be due to the renaming of the University in 1983 like Debora says, or maybe a graduation gift? Or a gift sent back to parents? I have emailed the University anyway so hopefully they can shed some light. In person it's a very interesting, well made piece!

    Very pretty Chinese brocade, Louise. It was most likely a gift to a foreign visitor. Since it is not a prestigious object like a jade carving, I think maybe for an exchange student.
