Face carved into section of wood is it African?

    Hi, I can't find anything quite like this. There are some called spirit carvings and things of that sort but those are mostly very recent and this looks to have some age to it. It looks African to me but that is just a guess. There are traces of an old coating of paint or varnish on it. It stands around 10 inches tall and is not marked in anyway. Thanks in advance for any help or ideas.

    The style of the face looks like it was inspired by Cambodian art such as the carvings at Angkor Wat:

    It may just be some student/artist project.
