Hallmarked for 1901. Gave it an ultrasound which removed much muck! It's in nigh on perfect condition.

How do you give it an ultrasound?

I've an ultrasound jewellery bath, did it in that. It's fine if you're careful. The water went black.

There are small ultrasonic cleaners for consumers, we have one too. This kind of thing:

    Hi,
Before they made the household size I used the hospital's. I dropped in a tiny locket with diamonds. The locket came out fine but the diamonds were missing.
I guess they were glued in and went down the holes in the drain. I use a strainer type holder so nothing gets lost.

I'm really careful with stone set pieces - yes, a strainer for those.

Once you get it clean and shiny, put one of little slips of Gorham or other brand anti-tarnish strips where you have the bag and it will stay nice for you. We use the strips at the museum in the cupboards where we store our silver trays and it really does help. We are planning to have custom cupboards made lined with Pacific cloth material for all of our silver we used for serving guests.

I'm actually not aiming to get it really shiny, I'm not mad about that with old bags like this. ;)

    Digressions are fine, Aqui.;)
I don't have that exact same one though. My hubby bought ours years ago to clean his glasses. I have used it on silver, but not on jewellery, so far. It does the job.:)

Oh, she knew exactly what she was doing bless her. I did a cheeky offer and she accepted, but I then ended up buying more Stuffs from her. And did it Friends and Family too. I think she was being pragmatic!

Could someone please point me to a thread on Antiquers that will not have me wanting to spend money?

Seriously: thanks for the tips, people!

Sorry, that is not something we do around here. We have given up all hope of ever being able to leave it all behind & you know the old saying misery loves company.
