I’m 99% sure this cannon, being sold as original, is a modern repro. I’ve owned many cannons cast by Pieter Seest in Amsterdam in the mid-18th C., and none looked much like this one. If anyone lives near Newport Beach, CA, I’d very much like to know the weight of the barrel alone. I’m guessing it is much lighter than a Seest cannon of the same size. It looks like the kind of fake cannon where basically a brass jacket is filled with plaster.

Should drop it on the seller's foot if it's discovered to be fake.

Don't know anything about cannon's, but I do agree there is a bad finish/cast...
Nothing you would expect to see on a time piece!

Those rough letters A and VOC are nothing like any VOC canon I've seen.
This one, in the Rijksmuseum collection, is by Pieter van Seest, you know the style and workmanship:

This is the alleged Pieter van Seest VOC canon, looks recently and badly made:

I love all your postings about cannons and bells. The workmanship difference is obvious in the picture, but how do you tell if something is recent?

Just as someone might make a fake of a Breitling watch today, didn't people throughout history copy the best of things to the best of their ability?

Are there fake copies of fine things done in the past that have been known to have great value?

None like it are known to have existed until recently, meaning none are in museums, collections, catalogs, books etc.

In particular, the three supposedly “VOC” bells of similar but historically-unknown shape and markings have all shown up in the market for the first time since 2014. A bit suspicious, no?

Your kitty is probably an accurate depiction of my face smelling a rat. As an antique cannon, I have a hunch it would make some nice scrap bronze.
