I think if gritty on your tooth - real. If smooth - cultured.

Thanks @Ownedbybear - should read: if smooth - Fake.

Cultured are gritty, they're still "real". It's the faux ones, such as those made from fish scale that are smooth.

I suspect these are cutured pearls.

Is the pearl in the clasp also gritty? Did you look on the part that pushes in all over it?

The genuinely nacreous productions of some poor freshwater mollusks, artificially induced. I don't know the whole story behind these pearls, but even buying from an expensive source they do not cost that much for a strand. If you're already in China, they're not much at all:

Bracelet construction is very simple; a better one would at least have been knotted between pearls. A pretty thing, not of high monetary value.

    thanks buddy !!

like most things there seems to be a massive price variation, as bronwen showed there seems to be alot very modern types from china

i get the impression these are a little older though

They're Chinese freshwaters from the look of them. They could be 20 years old with no problem, maybe 25. Not much older.

Older pearls that size, if they were cultured pearls, would be knotted and have a precious metal clasp. These were made when someone figured the pearls were worth about as much as glass beads.

thanks for the info, i had a feeling it wasnt a quality piece by the clasp.

was only a £2 thrifty buy, but i've gained that back in knowledge now !

Hard to get hurt at two quid. The pearls are worth that; I'd be busily restringing them on proper cording with the knots and adding a real clasp. But I'm weird.

I agree. They seem to be graduated. I would wear them as is.
