Seems to me that with all that space beneath the drawers it works well as a desk in the modern world. But it could very well have been something else originally - server or washstand in particular.

Very attractive, it's Sheraton style, is it period?
I'd say wash stand as well, all that open space plus the 3 sided gallery point to wash stand.

Hmmm, are you sure it's paint? looks like figured/tiger maple on beaded drawer fronts under a red wash. A wash is kinda a very thin paint or stain that doesn't obscure the figure of the wood, just colors it.

Maybe we're all misunderstanding - he did say it was "was painted red."

Yes, i think that's correct, that 3 sided gallery ( back splash) is what did it for me, fairly typical wash stand design feature.

Yep, wash stand, for the reasons James mentioned (the gallery). Figured maple drawer fronts with the rest walnut? A conservative style for the time period; I'm guessing 1860s-70s.

I would add that dimensions can often help in ID of furniture forms, for example, a wash stand height of 33 inches is "standard" where a server height standard would be in the 36 inch range.
This issue often comes up when looking at "dressing tables" VS a "highboy base" which look very similar but are quite different, in terms of height/size and function.
Naturally a standard height/size are not rigidly followed, exceptions are common in american furniture. Still, dimensions are useful.

Yeah, a 3 sided gallery makes no sense at all for a server, it just gets in the way of "serving", lol. Whereas that gallery is often seen on wash stands to contain water splash.
