Fierce Face Wood Carving Totem/Tiki God Thing.

    Asian calligraphy writing carved on the front.
    8 inches tall. A souvenir?

    Hoping you can help me figure out where on Earth it came from and what people/culture.

    well the writing on the front does not seem to belong to the original carving ...but added recently.
    I don't recognize the origin of either....!

    It's a souvenir item from Korea, depicting a jangseung. Jangseung resemble totem poles, and full-size ones are put on the edges of villages to serve as guardians to scare away demons.

    They come in both male and female versions. This is a male, with the traditional inscription which (so I was told) translates roughly as "Great General of All Under Heaven. Female jangseung say "Great General of the Underworld."

    I've seen one motel (Korean owned) in Oregon, that features three of these (10-12 feet, garishly painted) at the entrance. It does make quite an impression.

    Somewhat off-topic comment here (apologies to lauragarnet)... but I just noticed that this thread has had 13,773 views since it was posted on Monday afternoon! Doesn't that work out to roughly 4 views every minute? Tiki/Totems seems to be a super hot item!
