Both signed. Can anyone make out the signature? There is a price tag which might also be a clue as to country of origin. Thinking these weren't terribly expensive when purchased new. Also, do you think these are meant to be candle holders? Thanks!

    They have umlauts above U.
The price tag looks like an L L600

The only country I can think of that uses Umlauts and an L currency sign together is Turkey Lire 600

    However I thought Hungarian first.

Could be made somewhere else to where they were sold

I thought Hungarian too. There is famous porcelain made in Hollohaza, Hungary which made me wonder about the other words.

Google translate tells me that muhely in Hungarian is "workshop" so maybe Hollo Workshop?

Google also says that Moldvai in Hungarian is Moldavian. Wherever that gets us. Maybe Moldavian figures made at the Hollo Workshop in Hungary. Or maybe not Hungarian and it's Moldavian shrug emoji.jpg

Lovely research, everyone! So sorry to be just getting back -- helping 90 year old mother avoid the emergency room. (Finger's crossed...)

I think this Holló Mühely is an excellent lead! :)

Thank you for the ID and the good wishes. My mom has a pinched nerve or something in her neck, just got really terrible today. I'm hoping she can make it through the night with some sleep and less pain. If not better tomorrow we may need to go in. As its the weekend, I checked in with the on call physician, who suggested the ER if needed. At the moment we are kind of in wait and see mode. Really the pits for Mom, she just had the big flu -- 2.5 weeks of it. Just hopes she has an okay night. Keeping the phone by the bed.

They are Hungarian - I have the exact same ones. Made by Laszlo Hollo in Budapest.

Very late, but I only just saw this thread.:shame:
The price tag says 1600,- which is the Continental way of writing 1600.00. I imagine the price was 1600 forint, the Hungarian coin.

We used to get a lot of these Hungarian ceramic figures here in the 60s and 70s.
