I have had this for a number of years, but am not sure whether it might have been made to use as a fire basket, or a decorative log basket. Does anyone have any ideas.

    Any help much appreciated.

I'd only ever seen them used as a magazine holder

Depending on the dimensions, the handles are probably for removing it from the firebox to clean up the ashes after each fire.

Flat backed grates were usually designed for shallow (sometimes only 12" deep) fireplace designed for burning coal. You wouldn't want blazing logs in such a shallow recess.

Larger grates were used in place of dogs in much larger fireplaces (3-6' wide, up to 2' deep). Blaze away!!!!
