Is it a flute or penny whistle or other? What would you call it? It's 11-1/2" long and is made of copper. Looks old. Says BENNETT SAMUEL LONDON

We did some googling but wonder if anyone knows more. Is it a rare piece? @SpringfieldArsenal?

    TIA Everyone!! :)

Thanks! We saw that. Do you know what we should refer to this as though?

I think it is a penny whistle. Lockdales UK had a similar one in 2014 at an estimate of £30-50.

You blow across a flute, not down it like a recorder..

Picard played a "straight" flute and that is yet to come in the year 2364:)

The producer did not know a flute from a piccolo.

When I was a young kid in grade school we started out learning to read music and play it on a "Phlutefone" - then after we mastered that we were introduced into actual instruments. I ended up playing the Coronet, then my parents put braces on my teeth and had to go to a Baritone then went to the Sousaphone because of the bigger mouthpiece cause I learned to read Bass clef sheet music!!

Certainly true of the transverse or orchestral flute; but the flute family is large and includes many end-blown flutes; many ethnic types of flutes are blown downward. Both pennywhistles and recorders are "fipple flutes," distinguished by their airway or ducted flue, if one wants to get technical.
This one does appear to be a pennywhistle, and I'd guess that Picard's instrument was also a pennywhistle, not a proper flute or piccolo.

The other day, I was sitting on the stone wall next to my house, and a boy, maybe 12 or 13, walked by, tootling rather un-melodically (yes, I KNOW that is not a word, but it describes the sound!) on some sort of instrument.

As most folks around here do (much to my delight!) he stopped to say "hi", so I asked him, "Oh, is that a recorder?" "No," he answered rather proudly, "It's a FIFE!"

He then showed me how it came apart into 3 pieces, small enough to fit in his back pocket. "Transportable," he told me. "Much easier to carry than my guitar."

"Ah," I said, attempting to be politic, "Are you good on the guitar?"

"Nope," he said. "I suck at that, too."
