These things have intrigued me since childhood. Dad's Mom had one, and so I've picked 'em up when I could. Even on eBay they're called...folding, expandable book racks or book ends.

There must have been a colloquial name for them, other than the strictly descriptive in my title. Anyone? Thanks for lookin', anyway!

The first is Oak, probably home-made. Strictly functional, sturdily crafted.

This is Brass, factory made but without any maker's mark. Undecorated save for the border on the end panels. The hinge points are machined brass castings.

around here retired men had nothing else to do so they turned to wood working. I have seen several in my area that I think were made by the same man.

I know about that...my Dad made boxes from wood. Amazingly fitted an' finished; wooden jewelry. One of these days I'll post pics of a few of them...promise!

Commonly called a book rack, opposed to a bookend.
