    Hi,
I'm trying to figure out if this medal is new. Small, 3/4" across, no name or numbers along the edge. The colours on the ribbon are off in the photo, the ribbon is purple and green.

It is a miniature of a British General Service Medal (usually called a GSM). The bars represent campaigns served in, in the late 1950s, early 60s.

Miniature medals were worn on formal occasions when not in uniform. A full sized, named medal with three bars would be worth $200 or more, the miniature, much less.

    Hi Cxgirl,
Your monitor must be off, on mine it is a true purple and green. Nice medal by the way. lol

    I agree with AF.
My Medal Yearbook 2011 says catalog value for the miniature is £15-£25
    In silver add £5.
You are correct about the colours being off in your pic, it should show purple with a central green strip.

    Hi Davey,
The colors are showing green with a wide purple stripe.

The modeling on each side does not look up to official standards. Cruder than I would expect on an officially issued medal.

They are official but yes cruder in design as they are very small, just a tad smaller than a Nickel.
Often worn with Mess Dress on a suit lapel and not uniform.

    Thanks for all the information!
I have no history on this, it came with a box of other pins and medals. I agree bob, I thought this looked a little crude. So this is an official issue but new?
greg, the purple is not showing the correct shade.
Here are some of the other pieces this came with.

The US military also uses miniature medals for dress uniforms, but I haven't noticed them being cruder because they're smaller. I'll have to check hubby's uniform closet tomorrow and take a closer look.
