Beetle tiara, necklace and earrings. Lady Granville's iridescent beetles parure, circa 1884 or 1885, was made from beetles from South America. Lord Granville had the parure made from the beetle's which were a gift from the Portugese Ambassador who was trying to secure a trade treaty concerning the Congo river basin. Lord Granville was foreign secretary at that time.

I have no problem with bugs per se as long as they don't invade my space uninvited. I don't intend to invade their space if they are fierce or poisonous so I'm quite happy in the UK. I have no fondness for fat spiders though.
This 'jewellery' may be stunning and amazing craftsmanship but I find it abhorrent. Those poor beetles.....:arghh:..and just the thought of wearing it with their scratchy, crunchy bits :meh::vomit:.
I do like bug jewellery as long as it's not corpses.

In college, I had a zoology professor that collected and wore brooches of all kinds of animals: beetles, chameleons, spiders, snakes, pigs, horses, frogs, dragon flies, dogs, cats, hampsters, mice, any animal you could name. It was an amazing collection. Many were quite expensive being made of gold and real jewels and stones. She is dead now and I just wonder what ever happened to all those brooches as she had no children to leave them to.

I love that the restoration expert's name is Zenzie Tinker.

There is still a ton of jewellery made with scarab beetles floating around. Amazing how durable those carapaces are.
