But they do like to look military, don't they. Is there a name for this shape of hat? (seemed like I'd have a better chance in Militaria than in Textiles)
Either forum is fine. Most textile people know the names of the usual hat shapes as well, especially if they were once part of civilian dress. This one was.
I hadn't thought of any of those words... bicorn, regalia, plume. Thanks to all. I took this to the ARS back in '99, where the experts treated it with contemptuous dismissal. They're the ones who said "parade hat". They also said Knights of Columbus, Knights of Pythias, Knights Templar, and early 20th C. They truly showed absolutely no interest in it at all.
Cockade is another word that never occurred. It will be a while before I'm able to look at that link, but I think it applies to the rosette rather than the entire hat. Useful word, though. Thanks.
