Purchased a beautiful French hunt table and have read from two different places what these figures on the base are. Many say dragons/griffith but another reputable source (thegatz, European antiques dealer of fine pieces) has stated this table depicts the fox and grapes fable. Opinions? What would you date this to? My best belief is 1870-1890. Thanks in advance!

I think we're going to need more light on the table legs to be any help.

Thank you all for the answers I will try to get more pics with better light soon! It was sitting in one of My local shops for over 2 years, staged horribly and could not see the legs or base itself at all. Probably why it never sold. But they marked the price down and I feel like I got a VERY reasonable deal on it.

Not sure what the critters are but think an 1880 date about right.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

That seems reasonable... unless there is any other creature that is said to emit something like that. It doesn't really look like flames, but of course it's very stylized.
