Today at one of my patient's homes I saw this beautiful vase tucked in a curio and asked if I could look at it. The glass was very heavy and the label said Old Satin and the bronze ormolu (just learned that word today) was just wonderful, too. It was about 7" tall. ormolu.jpg heavy satin.jpg Please provide any insight you may have on this piece. I told her I felt it was pretty special and said I would let her know what the "Experts" had to say.

I thought so, as well. The craziest part? Her great aunt used it as a candle holder, which is why it is singed around the rim.:wideyed:

I'd call this a gilded brass mount, not actual ormolu ... not sure of origin but looks European 1870 -1890 ish imo

Ask her what nationality her great aunt was. The bird has a crown.

the bird has a baguette in its claws...so it's a special breakfast vase...Second Empire or Napoleon III.

    1stdibs is notoriously overpriced.

Does appear to be the same maker with the same type of glass and the same ormolu decoration.
I think I would trying to find info on Russian glass prior to WWI.

    Thank you,
I have already learned not to take much stock in the prices on 1stdibs, but I am a visual person, so I look for similarity.

It is ormolu-like of course but I guess I was splitting hairs saying it wasn't "true" ormolu. It is more likely to be gold-plated (electroplate).

Today, I'm sure the definition of 'ormolu' has been "modified" to include ware like this, but AFAIK the "actual" ormolu process was eventually banned as the craftsmen were poisoned by mercury vapour.

I was poisoned after I licked it, so I thought for sure it was real!;)

This is the closest I could find for the breakfast vase theory

What exactly is a ONE-SIDED eagle?

I think he's referring to the fact that most(if not all) russian eagle symbols/emblems have 2 heads.

    No, not at all.
I'm sorry, I may have misled you. I only suggested a line to investigate.
Are what FID is showing French eagles? They look very similar to the eagle on your vase.

I only suggested Russia because your lady was from Lithuania. And the time period was right for ornate items. More than what I would have expected from France. However, I am only throwing out avenues to investigate.

Okay...I am only "pretty" sure that the eagle is not holding a baguette, at this point.

I found a lot of one-sided eagles with crowns, but I am not sure it makes or breaks anything.
