I bought this tapestry from an Estate Sale. It came in a pair with the other one much longer. When I uploaded it some information came up about Paris, France. The stitching is irregular on the back and the coloring on the back is interesting none the less. More interesting is the scene on the front. In the distance, there looks to be a ship with a flag flying on it. And behind the people in the scene, when looking closely, it looks like a body of water that is reflecting the scene. The waterfall fountain and serp 20190129_143023.jpg 20190128_225831.jpg 20190129_142641.jpg 20190128_225824.jpg 20190128_225818.jpg 20190129_143023.jpg 20190129_142641.jpg 20190128_225824.jpg ent next to the fountain also gives away it being water. It is amazing to me the art of making such exquisite beauty that goes into making tapestries. I am hoping maybe someone can chime in with the time period based on the clothing and if the garb is Royal? Thank you,

These tapestries were popular in the 19teens to 20s.
Usually made in France or Belgium.
Sometimes you can find a stamp on the back with the country of origin.

The clothing is 18th century, but this was made at a later date, as cluttered explained.
These charming tapestries were often made after popular paintings which were reminiscent of a romantic period. They were also copied in Turkey.

There was no specific royal garb, except some added accessories for official occasions, which leisurely fruit picking isn't.;) Fruit picking is symbolic for something else, of a more intimate nature.

    Hi,
When you see stripes of color on the back like yours it is a newer (1920s) and later piece. The older tapestries were finished differently. The are wonderful pieces even though not as old as I expected.

Jivvy the research is my favorite

The only thing I would add is "machine made."

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Charming image - the piece appears to be in good condition, too.
