People are bidding even though NO preview is available. To non-auction-goers, I’ll explain that you always want to look at the merchandise up close before bidding, but in this one, they aren’t allowing anyone to go look. This is unusual in my experience, but not unheard-of. It will make for somewhat lower bids, but I’ve bought hundreds of things, new and used, from pictures only, so it doesn’t hurt me a lot if I find items of interest. In my own case, I’ll probably bid 10-30% less depending on the item, because I couldn’t inspect it. In the case of new-looking machines and tools that have all Data plates, that I’m convinced have been used very little, lack of preview won’t bother me a bit. Also, the “site” will “tailgate-load” all items, meaning I wouldn’t need a rigger, just send a truck big enough to carry the stuff. I have a 10,000 lb. capacity forklift so I can unload any of the items on my end. But there are only a few items I have any interest in.

I had to use all of my will power but I resisted and didn’t bid on anything. None of the items would give my machine shop a totally new capability that we need, although some things would let us do some things better or faster. But I really didn’t want to kill an entire long day making the round trip to NJ just to pick up a couple of items that aren’t critical to our operation. Better to use that day and the money saved to fix up machine tools I already have.
