I found this at a sale and after researching online, I believe it is a handpainted coat of arms/family crest from George Washington. It's professionally framed and I haven't opened up the back. It's painted on paper with some metallic paints and the griffon bird at the top is cross-hatched in black. Some of the words "Rexitus Acta Probat" have chipped off and the paint is old and chippy. I've read that George Washington was proud of his family crest and used it as bookplates and other items. Any thoughts?

Oh, yes. The Washington family crest... Stars and stripes. Now what does that remind me of? (Rhetorical.)

Could/would you post a photograph of the back?

The back has the label from a framing store in Rochester NY.

    So post-1963 for the framing.

What is the (approximate) size of the coat of arms?

Oh, tiny then. And, on second look, it does appear older than the frame.

Oh, yes, it is old and the paper is worn. I think it might have been taken from a larger piece of paper, but I don't want to take the frame apart in case I damage the paint further. Thanks, Debora.

Debora, I decided to open it up and to my surprise, there is blue printing below the crest that reads "Coat Armour of General George Washington". The paper has blue lines running along the sides. It looks like it was cut from a larger piece of paper. You can see the embossing on the back.

Trimmed from something. Book page? Looks like a more modern version of Washington's coat of arms. He used this one. Interesting that it doesn't say "President."
