    IMG_6808.png IMG_6809.png IMG_6810.png IMG_6812.png I am interested in buying this porcelain beer jug (not mug as it says in the title) with a pewter lid and fabulous pewter gnome on the thumb rest. It’s 31cm tall.

    I am pretty sure that it is German and late 19th century.

    The blue bird pattern was used extensively by Greiner of Rauenstein but the mark doesn’t seem to be their mark.

    Any ideas?

    Didn't know that! Small creatures that live underground. Association with miners makes sense. Called kobald in German which is also the German name for cobalt blue. (At least, that's what I think I learned from a quick internet search.)

    There are different words for gnome in German. I think this type could be a Heinzelmännchen, which is the type that works hard.
    A Kobold is a nasty type of gnome, more like a troll. The German word for cobalt is kobalt, not Kobold.;)
    Cobalt blue is kobaltblau in German.

    I'm laughing, @Any Jewelry. Knew you'd know better. As Alexander Pope wrote...

    A little learning is a dangerous thing ;
    Drink deep, or taste not the Pierian spring :
    There shallow draughts intoxicate the brain,
    And drinking largely sobers us again.

    Back to the tap for me.

    What I love about this group is that I come up with some vague motion that my aging brain coughs up and then someone here runs with it and gives us the history and the detail. Luv you guys and gals! And who wouldn't live that little gnome on the handle!
