This is my first post although I put a short bio in the Introductions forum. I bought these calipers about 30 years ago and have not been able to determine what they do. Most of the markings are abbreviations of technical terms. The seller's father was a Polish officer in WWII but he said the tool is German and that seems correct. I cannot find any information about H. Kirchner in Korneuburg. My guess is that the various scales numbered on the left are for distances, perhaps references to map scalar units. Some words translate as: lager = warehouse or camp, verposten = outpost.

It is made of German silver and fits easily in the palm of your hand. germanscale1.jpg Dennis

Definitely the same device, earlier version. The tables, etc., on the outside I think are just useful info for a commander to have at his fingertips so he doesn't have to rely on memory alone. My other thought about the fundamental purpose is that it has something to do with setting the angle on some long range ballistic weapon to send the projectiles of various size/weight various distances.

    We should also ask @anundverkaufen

I'm assuming 'Karten' are maps, the way a cartographer is a map maker.

Yep. It's pretty much the same word in French too.

I think the award is still up for grabs, since no one knows exactly what it does. :hilarious:

Wow, you guys are good! I love that there are so many variations. The one with the magnifying glass is especially nice. Too bad the links don't have any prices. Dennis
