I found these at a local thrift store (same day I found the Krayer surreal painting I posted asking about the artist) - they are carved with GITMO & Guantanamo Bay Cuba. The wood figure has the dates '84 - '9 carved on the bottom, which ic before the detainee prison was opened so these shouldn't be by terrorists, right? Any problems with selling them on eBay? (if possible I'll sell them locally here in Miami, where they should do good!). Am I allowed to ask what, if any, value something from such a place has? As always I appreciate any help. PS - I noticed the price on bottom of one after taking photo - I took it off with fingernail polish remover
Guantanamo Bay is a U.S. naval base. Thousands of sailors are stationed there; yours is probably a souvenir item. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guantanamo_Bay_Naval_Base The other is dedicated to "Chonqui" with much love from "Cousin Ernesto." Don't speak Cuban slang so have no idea what Chonqui means but it is the title of a salsa song so nickname may have some reference to that. Debora
ebay does not understand English. Cannot fathom laws. They regularly pull any listings with 'cuba' in them. They are perfectly legal to do anything else with them.
And don't even try to sell them on Etsy. Cuba is a bad bad word there and the fastest way to get an item pulled and perhaps your shop closed.
My husband has a few souvenir items from his time stationed at Gitmo in the early 70s. My mother used to let me play her old wind up Victrola and she had all the old records (she was born in 1909). One of them I still have is called "I'll See You In C-U-B-A" They spelled it out. Maybe we should come up with a creative spelling like Qubah.
