Doesn't look very old. What is the decoration called in the middle of it?
It's about 6" high. Thanks for your time.

It's what the vet uses to show where the ball of yarn went.
Also where it might be heading - straight out OR if it goes the other way you may need a strong laxative for your furry friend.

I sorta, wanna , hafta say - I don't think it's Murano. But it might be.
    I'll watch for other opinions.

Here is Murano Zoo website. Scrolling down the index on the left, you will see a section on "Mammals Cats & Dogs." You might find a similar cat?

Thanks so much Susan! I didn't find it there, so does that rule out Murano?
    Thanks:)

No, it just means it's not there. Cats like to hide.

I'm guessing not Murano. The face seems sort of cartoonishly applied for an Italian piece. (But could be wrong, look at the old Murano clowns...) People love cats, so if for resale, you'll probably find a buyer.

This post reminds me of something I was meaning to mention on the board. My mom dragged me into "Hobby Lobby" to get some inexpensive frames last week. I've never been in a Hobby Lobby. It is a monolithic craft store, but they also sell furnishings, wall decor, etc. and I was shocked to see that much of what they sell mimics antiques and vintage pieces.

There was a display, for example, with large solid glass animals, roosters, etc. all with mixed glass inside, and that had a Murano look about them, but made in China.

Not your cat, but things like this:

    http://www.hobbylobby.com/Home-Deco...llow-Head-Glass-Cat-with-Color-Inside/p/95815

I know Hobby Lobby isn't the only spot selling Chinese glass, but kind of surprised me and now I'm even more skeptical about figural glass pieces I run into at the thrift.

Wait for others to comment though.

Thanks so much Lucille & Johnny. Yes agreed, I've seen other items looking like antiques in Michaels (the craft store) as well.
Ok, I'll just stick with Murano style! Thanks everyone!

    Hi,
Look at the eyes. Tyeldom3 yours are just straight. The Murano are off centered and look more "realistic". Yours look like a copy. JMHO.

Maybe! Checking the cats and dogs on the Murano site, I'll say it could be. It would be nice if all the artisans on that island engraved their name on what they put out. Only a few do that.

On the other hand, there are forgers and Murano stickers can be faked. I don't see any "Cristalleria" as above mentioned in the Murano dogs and cats site.

If it says Stile Murano, it was not made on the island of Murano. It means in the style of. That label on Laura's cat means glassworks in the art style of Murano. Some variants on that label are Italian, most are not.

I actually don't get too hung up about "lesser value" pieces not being made on Murano. Some of the stuff sold in Venice is the most awful tat, and much of the new Chinese stuff is actually rather good.

By admission, much of the smaller, cheaper stuff sold in Firenze "in the style of Murano" IS Chinese imports -particularly the novelty stuff. I once watched the proprietor of a shop unpack and place in the window a whole case of little glass cats with gold fish in their bellies. The shipping box was clearly marked CHINA and when I asked, the proprietor explained that they were cheaper than those made on the Island and sold better to the tourists.

The process is called 'frit pick up.' It's done by rolling a small gather of hot glass over a surface covered with chips of broken (frit) glass. They are warmed in and marvered (rolled into the surface.) Then another gather of crystal is taken, over the frit and the original gather.
