This was in my latest joblot.
Any ideas as to how it started life or what it was?.
Plain black glass plaque with square of gold and a central diamond.
Diamond has a porthole behind it to let light through but it’s currently full of dirt. Confident it’s diamond as both gem testers say it is. Mary Contrary is rubbish with semi precious but spot on with diamonds. Diamond appears square although there’s a lot of dirt with a flat table on the top. Missing something that was attached with the other holes.
The black glass is about 18mm long,12mm wide and 2.5mm thick.
The gold square is c2.5mm sq and the diamond in the centre is 1mm square. Any thoughts as to what it is (or what I could use it for!?)
Sorry it’s the devil to photograph!
    Thanks for looking :)

Looks to me like a black onyx from a man's signet ring with the gold initial removed...

The "porthole" is for cleaning the back of the stone and nothing to due with light.

Impossible to date, the style was probably sold for at least 60 years. Replacement onyx stones were still being sold in 2000.
