Featured grandads WW2 cigarette case - silver ?

    hi folks

    always thought this was plated as there was no hallmarks, after giving it a little clean i found some

    i am right in thinking 900 silver ?, german ?, swiped :rolleyes: ?

    be nice to know for sure when selling it...........(only joking of course !!:))

    any thoughts appreciated

    Sure of your dates? That's a 1930s photograph. (Not that the photograph dictates age but...)

    not positive deb, but thats what i was told, and leaflet inside seems to be of that era

    Yes. Sometimes photographs are of the "when we met" type. That could be it. But someone sure to come along and read marks. That will give you definitive date.

    Then Wimmer and Reith was a German company? Hum. Perhaps your grandfather did have it before the war then.

    It might be a wartime photo - don't forget, women here were wearing clothes they'd bought before the war, and many had shorter hair, too.

    5th Bn were at the Normany Landings. 1st Armoured wasn't created till 1941, so it fits fine.

    I think it's far more likely that Grandpapa liberated that case. My Pa did a bit of that. Importing German silver cases would have been unusual in the 1930s, to say the least.

    Nope. I've photos of female relatives taken during WW2 with similar hair and clothing, and of that size, too. There's plenty of contemporaneous news stuff out there, as well. The UK was not the US in terms of style and much else.

    The Victory paper can't be earlier than 1941 of course! ;)

    The case is of course earlier.
