Hello! Recently was gifted an antique grandfather clock from a plantation home in Mississippi. Looks to be regency style, George Joice - Basingstoke on clock face. Last service date of 1944 etched on back of face dial. Possibly circa 1830? I am in west Texas and have been unsuccessful in finding someone to appraise and possibly even restore it for me! It is in ROUGH condition and too unstable to even stand at this point.

Trying to upload a photo but all file sizes too large! Would love to date this clock if possible if anyone has information on the maker.

Thank you for the photo tips!

    • so, I have been sleuthing all evening and this clock looks to be circa 1800 for sure based on the dials, dots/stars for minutes, 12x12 faceplate.
    • What intrigued me is it’s so difficult to find ANYTHING else on this maker (George joice). He possibly moved to the States and married in 1819 in Maryland, but that’s completely hypothetical.
    • Are there possibly many clockmakers out there who are not listed as makers in books because no works survive? Am wondering if this is his last surviving clock?
    • i am not looking to sell this clock but am interested in a potential value point! The weights are lead with brass encasement. Dial hands brass with some ornamentation. Marquetry design at the top.

    three More photos...
Shows some of the condition, which is not good. But I would still love to restore it. It has not aged well but I think it could be brought back to life.

Tagging a couple who might have some input for you... @gregsglass, @afantiques ???
There is also an antique clock shop in West Townsend, Massachusetts, of which one of the owners is occasionally on the Antiques Roadshow..... however, it’s late, I’m on my iPad and cannot think of either his name OR his shop name, at the moment, sorry to say.....but I will come up with it tomorrow!!

    EDIT: Couldn’t wait!! Found it....Delaneyantiqueclocks.com
It’s a family business....they’ve been in it for over 50 years, and claim to have the largest selection of American made Tall Clocks in the country!! So I hope maybe if they can’t help you they can at least point you in a good direction!!
Good luck!! P.S. Your clock looks amazing, but yes, parts in rough shape....
please at least ask if they know of decent restorers near where you are to hopefully avoid having to ship it!!!! JUST MY OWN OPINION!!! These clocks are, again, my opinion, fragile and sensitive!!!

Any knowledge is appreciated!! I find it fascinating that it was potentially made in England and found its way to an American plantation home.
