Green windmill vase

Hi everybody,

need help with identifying this green vase, there is no markings or indents to signify who made it. If anybody could offer any information it would be greatly appreciated.

Apparently the vase is 60 plus years in age and was done by a Dutch artist who apparently was known for not signing his work?

 

How can you possibly know that ?
& if U do.... why would you hold that information from us , who are here to try and help you the best we can with the ....ahemmm...information and photo's supplied !!!

Hello and welcome robbi - At one time (more than 60 years ago actually - starting about 1900 and running into the Depression era) dutch scenes were all the rage. Scenes of dutch children, windmills, ladies with bonnets and wooden shoes, etc. were found in many, many homes. There was also a hobbyist phase going on at about the same time. Womens' magazines printed patterns and scenes that a home painter could copy on to all types of items especially dishes and vases.

Your vase looks like it was painted by one of these hobbyists. There is a lack of sophistication to the painting. If you google "dutch scenes on porcelain", or words to that effect, you'll see pieces produced in countries like England and Austria that show much more complicated and better executed designs. Even so, many of these designs were romanticized and not typical of what dutch painters would have shown of their homeland. So, a dutch painter seems unlikely.

We've also found over our years of answering queries that family history tends to be a bit unreliable as to the origin of certain objects. A hand painted dutch scene morphs into "dutch painter who apparently was known for not signing his work". It rather like a game of telephone where the message can become embellished and distorted by being told multiple times by multiple people.

My best guess at this point is that your vase is milk glass and was painted by one of these home painters. I can tell more if you can show me a shot of the bottom of the vase and a shot from the top showing the interior of the vase. I would also guess that your vase is older than 60 years based on the shape of the vase. Looking forward to seeing those photos if you can produce them.

Thank you for the additional photos, robbi. It looks like the base color of the vase might be green. I'd need a hands-on to tell for sure. I think someone decided to dress up a relatively plain vase by painting on the dutch scene. I still think the vase is an older late Victorian vase - possibly Bohemian. The painting is not original to the vase and could have been added at any later time. I wish I could tell you more or something more definitive but sometimes the history of an item gets lost.
