    Hi Folks

something else i picked up at auction(10)

not really my type of thing but quite nice and decorative

not sure what the empty faces are about ?

don't know if this is a souvenir type, where the artist will be impossible to find or not

signed but can't quite make out

    under glass

    any info appreciated

Not for my money. Surely a touris/souvenir painting from that town (well I would think)

I see "Oscar V." Not much to go on. And, interestingly, Google Lens brings up many Guatemalan paintings in a similar style (e.g. faceless) but by different artists.

yeah i noticed that as well, and its not a particularly good sign, but the prices caught my attention more, which might have been short sighted. i'm finding image search is not a particularly useful tool when buying

still think its a bargain though and don't dislike it ;)

I like it, but then I generally like nice art with regional costumes.

do ya reckon the empty faces are just a modernist approach like you see in sculpture etc

The internet says it's because the figures are representational and not portraits. Common in Guatemalan folk art.

Had to look it up... Almost 44% of Guatemalans are indigenous, the highest percentage in the Americas (followed by Bolivia.)

That is what I would say too. I used to make figurines like that, only mine had a nose as the only feature.;)

Looks like it's an encaustic painting. Is that the case?

sorry deb, didn't realize the thread had carried on. there is something interesting going on in it as there are raised elements/details to it

Learn now what a ‘encaustic’ painting is (so thanks) From other examples on line it just states ‘surface texture added to create detail’ no sure how that is done. Also looks like the prices of these folk art paintings varies greatly (which surprised me,stiil looks like souvenir street art to me)
