I found this today and had a few questions.
First can you tell me what the type is. From what i've seen so far are the type where the belt just loops over the end and snaps on. this has the attachment with set screws on the back.

Second is it brass and can it be polished or is it just ruined?
It was in a box of stuff my dad gave me. I don't think is was his or my mom's as I have never seen it before. he doesn't know where it came from. but it's mine now.
    It is big and heavy. 2 1/2" x 2" and 5 oz

    Third, Is it vintage?

They still make it but I think yours is vintage. It’s reversible-that’s why that extra piece is there. It looks good enough to me to invest $7.50 for a professional authentication if you’re selling it. I don’t believe the finish can be restored but wait for the jewelry experts to post.

Thank you reader. I don't understand how it could be reversed though.

It was originally plated and the plating has worn off in the dark areas. Can't tell from the photos what the base metal is.

Yes, unlikely to be repairable but... The starting retail price for GUCCI Double G buckles with belt is $450. If authentic, wouldn't hurt to ask company if something could be done. They're a luxury goods company after all and their customer service is very good. And if not repairable, sure saleable as is.

Well. I didn't know how much you were interested in restoring it. You could get a used rectifier for under a hundred, but the gold would be pricey.

I'll just get it authenticated and sell as is. Thank for all the help and information.

    Hi,
Saw a lot of them on Rodeo Drive in Hollywood back in the 60s. I bought several belts then my favorite was a suede wide belt with 3 6 9 in roman numerals going around the belt. I think the numbers were the address of the store. I bought the Gucci belt to go with my shoes. The Gucci shoes were 35 dollars back then and when they raised the price to 45 dollars and I protested "No dead cow is worth 45 dollars.
The last time I bought Gucci shoes they were 175 dollars. The "chicness" has gone away.:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

I suspect if you got at it with a Sunshine Cloth it would look fine as is.

I'm thinking the brass has a clear protective coating that's worn off, not gold plating. A Sunshine Cloth as suggested by Ownedbybear would help, but if it still looks a little rough or unevenly finished, you could do what I've done with vintage brass purse frames, compacts, and lipstick cases in that condition. I remove the clear coating with acetone (I have to "work" at it to get all the "varnish" off, and wear a mask that blocks fumes), then polish with Simichrome or a polishing cloth. I don't attempt to re-coat with a clear finish, just buff when needed, and I mention all that when selling. However.....since you have a Gucci buckle, it may not be worth the time, and will sell for the same amount either way.

That was my thought, a lacquer coating.
