I don't know how long I have had this figurine or where I got it. Has been in my curio cabinet, behind other things and I forgot about it. There is no signature. I think the stone is softer than soapstone. Rougher finish. It is only a little over 3 inches tall. Looks like a fox or coyote. If I could find out what the stone is I could do a better job of looking it up. Thank You. fox1.png fox2.png fox3.png fox4.png

Magnesite is a less hard stone. Howlite is also less hard.

Try also Howlite. They are mistaken for each other.

Does it look and feel like compacted salt? Gritty?
Stone will be smooth not gritty.

Depends on the type of stone, tools used and finish process.

Could be unpolished marble. Hard to tell from photos:

Compact salt is also what I was thinking. I had a boy/girl set years ago.

Yes, marble feels cools, although polished marble will seem cooler than unpolished in the same conditions. The suggestion wiscbirddog made, alabaster (I would say gypsum- rather than calcite-type) is a good one too. They are all calcium based minerals & can have similar appearance.

Not really gritty but more of a dry piece. Smooth but not shiny smooth like porcelain.

Ok, I thought if I tried scratching the bottom of this piece I might find something to work with. I took a metal file and scratched a bit of the bottom of the figure and came up with this. Dark picture so you could see the dust. Hmm. Does this help?? stone dust.png
