Hand Carved Wood Letter Opener

Does anyone know what kind of bird this is?

 

Might just be a generic "bird" carved by somebody who doesn't know much about birds.
If I were guessing, I would say it's a duck.
Has a parrot-y body but not the beak.
The beak/bill is not of a seed-cracker or predator.
Has visible nares (nostrils), as most ducks do.
Waterfowl and such do sit on poles, too, and that might be the idea here.

 

Since the wood looks black, I guessed it might be ebony and did a Google search. There is a similar one on ebay with a Tanganyika, Africa sticker.

You can poke around looking at carved ebony and see if it pans out or not. My computer is being bad, cranky and slow. I think I need to reboot. ugh.
