Handpainted Nippon China - Have You Seen This Mark?

Picked up an interesting piece on Friday from a local "antique dealer's" inventory reduction sale. The shape is unusual, the china is translucent and I liked the decoration. Plus it didn't hurt that he gave me a deal (over and above his already much reduced prices) on the small pile of things I picked out because I am a repeat customer. ;) I've been through all the Japanese marks on Gotheborg twice and cannot find this mark or anything like it.

The mark appears to be on a printed decal. Does it ring any bells? What would you guess on timeframe?

Good heavens! Talk about a fire sale!

Thanks for finding those, Fig. I already knew it had to be before 1922 (in theory,) but I'm still surprised that this mark isn't on the Goteborg site. Not even as a "found but not yet identified."

Mostly these days, Nippon sells in the category Good Luck With That.(sigh)

For 6 bucks I'm happy to have something a bit different to enjoy. For the price (even though marked down sharply) on that last listing, the seller can keep it.

I hate to put a damper on your buy, but is it possible that this is misrepresented as Nippon?

This is the ebay one, and I also see a faint square outline on yours. If it was real Nippon, would they have used a decal to put the label on? Only asking because and I don't know. I do remember when Nippon was selling for high prices there were a lot of fake pieces.

That's an excellent question, Pat. I wondered about the decal too. My piece has what appears to be honest wear, so it's not like it just came off the production line. If it's a fake, it's definitely an old fake.

When would you say this stuff was "hot?"

Weren't the prices high in the mid 90s. My memory isn't so great, so I'm not positive.

Not all Nippon was marked. McKinley act 1891 required origins for imports, "Made in" term was 1921.
Am I seeing lustre on your vase? If so, that would be early 1900s.

Now here is where the debate is.

Nippon is the name for Japan. I believe they started using the term Japan somewhere in the 19teens (you'll have to check for exact dates).

Your vase is an earlier piece of Japan porcelain, I'm just not sure it is pre - 1900. Which is what most people tend to think of as Nippon.

I could be entirely wrong about all of this. Wait for others to chime in.

I wouldn't call it lustre. There is a little bit of worn gold left on the outer flat side and top of the handles and more of it left around the base.

I would not expect it to be pre-1900 either.

Nice buy Susan. It is a real mark. This is just part of an article i read on "I Antique online"

There are some very diverse and ... unusual ... Nippon marks whose very designs would make you believe they're fakes. Like the Nippon Tanega symbol with two rooster heads jutting out of a nest; or the T Nippon backstamp with two ho-o birds; or the Kinjo Nippon marks with either one or two fish whose bodies arch over their own heads-all real, all authentic - who'da thought?

I was never able to pin down any dates, But I had a piece a few years ago, bought it for I think $2.00. Sold it on ebay for $45.00
