7 1/4" diameter, 1" deep. Set of 5 were at the thrift, they are just so delicate. May have little value, but thought might be fun to set out at a dinner party, if not for resale.

Can anyone explain the what the signed part refers to? Would that have been the decorator at the company that applied the gold leaf or something? Each is hand signed, not a stamp. Thanks. plate1.jpg plate2.jpg

    Hi,
Looks like it was done by a great china painter.

Thanks for taking a look, Greg.

Do you mean painted at the factory or something else? There were 5 of these, so have to assume at one time 8 or more. They are all identical on the top in the detailed pattern -- almost like a transfer maybe (?) possibly gold paint over a transfer if there was such a thing.

I usually avoid older plates but could not pass these up.

The plate has both the Haviland manufacturers mark and the Haviland decorator marks, so at least some of the plate was decorated at the factory.

Maybe someone just put the owners initials on the back and the date, which is consistent with both marks use. Or the initials and date were put on since it was a custom order. Not sure.

    Getting ready to list these.

Plates are 1 inch high, 7 1/2 across. Would I call these "salad" plates?

    Thanks!

Yes, that is the usual size for salad plates

You might also call them dessert plates.

Sounds good. I'll give the measurements and say "salad or dessert". Certainly would work for either. Thanks!:)
