    What is this called?

It's too heavy for me to even move it nowadays!!

    What's an approximate value?

You have an older automobile 'tow bar.' The chains would secure the flat ends to the bumper or axle of the vehicle to be towed. The socket end dropped onto the trailer hitch ball of the towing vehicle.

A neighbor has one and I have used it. It'll do in a pinch for a get-it-home sort of adventure. Not many modern vehicles have a place to secure them anymore.

Steersman, any idea what it could be worth in scrap value?
I must ditch this, I cannot drag this thing home.

Seems such a shame that modern vehicles have become so dumbed down..!

Somebody with a '52 pickup might well want it. Or would you need a '37?

    No kidding! THANKS!!! :D
You've convinced me to lug it home too!
There is a HUGE base of classic car collectors in nola!
I'd have never thought about that had you not told me.
    Thank you so much. :D

Almost a shame that you forgot all the older cars & trucks still on the road and being collected !! :):)

    Good call Eve !!!

Totally a shame and my bad - but my brain is scrambled from being so sick and having to completely liquidate 3 bldgs in a 4-day period!

I actually don't often see classic cars on the roads anymore. In Louisiana, one must attend a show. In Hawaii, they rust so quickly that people there don't seem to collect them.

I thought this was a given...
There are a great many old vehicles still functional because they were meant to last.
There are literally many more on the road each year because of availability of parts to restore and update them.
There are companies that exist to just provide such parts.
Many have all new components which are from new vehicles and some replace the entire frame and running gear with late model systems, especially trucks.
My '69 Chevy Step Side pickup has served me since 1975 and has never let me down and I won't give up my '68 Nova SS either. :)
