Had some land cleared and was walking it found this odd looking shoe. It looks old, but I'm not sure. I'm confused on what appears to be threaded bolts that held sole together?? I've considered taking a metal detector to scan ground.

Welcome. I'm having trouble sorting out what I'm seeing in the photos (typical for me) but think I'm looking at a boot & maybe eyelets for lacing it up?

Yes appears to be a boot. This is two more images with a close up of the threaded metal.

I'd like to know how long the sole is. I wonder if it is a man's or woman's shoe.

Swirvus, I am just curious but . . . which part of North Carolina did you find it in -- coastal, piedmont, or mountains?

It's looking kind of like a Doc Marten to me. The screws suggest there was a really heavy leather sole & that the boot could be resoled when needed. My guess is man's work boot.

They might be what we call Hobnail boots, worn by coal miners etc.

These are Hobnails, US people might have a different word for them.

That's very interesting. You might be right, any guess on age?
Maybe worth searching area with metal detector.

Any age from the last 150 years, not of any value but there might be other stuff (coins, tokens, keys, jewellry) if you metal detect the area.

Yes for sure didn't figure any value based on condition alone. But yes I was thinking maybe other stuff buried in ground. I'll update if I find any other objects in area.

They look a bit like my paddock boots actually.

Modern paddock boot. Not sure if there are metal screws(?) holding bits together as only stitching shows. In your photos it only appears to me that the metal is around the edge. Is that right?

It is a wooden pegged sole Blucher boot, typically worn by workers. The threaded screws were probably for attaching the heel, or a brass or copper toe. It's hard to tell from some photos. Wooden pegged soles are pretty much no longer being made by 1890, the metal eyelets date this after the 1840s -- could be civil war era...
