I tried googling " m rauking" and "m ranking" because it looks like one of those two but couldn't find anything

    Ranking.
When you search artist Ranking you get the rank/list as in status, not the person.

Nothing by name on artnet or findartinfo...

I did try to go around artnets's index, searching "ranking+artnet" - pulls "top 300" :/

Could well have been a Sunday painter. Working in the Tonalist/Luminist style. Could benefit from a good clean.

My best guess is Mabel Ranking: born 1853-ish; never married; lived in London 1881; may have played the church organ; never seemed to have a job; did have a couple of inheritances; in later years was described as living "of her own means"; died in 1946.

Plus (and this is an important bit), she left no easily found hint that she ever painted anything. :hungover:

    So probably not her.

Pretty painting, and I agree with M. Ranking, Tonalist, and most likely amateur.
But they are not sure she played the organ either. She could have painted and played the organ. Probably not at the same time, but if she did, she was extremely accomplished.

Would have had to have been ambidextrous.

I checked, doesn't seem to be a viable surname.

Both my husband and I are ambidextrous. My husband can write two different sentences at the same time. Scary.
I am a mere amateur, but my neurologist insists I am 100% ambidextrous.

Compositionally, it's very stale. Horizon line is almost splitting the vertical canvas, and the sailboat is dead center, horizontally. The quality of light is not bad, though.

A census taker once gave Miss Mabel's occupation, her occupation, as "spinster."

Your words cannot wound her, sir.

Then again, "old girl" doesn't sound so hot, either :)
