Just yard sale junk or something better?
1 1/2" diameter cold to the touch and looks carved.

Petrified wood? Sure looks like wood, but it's stone. It could be a Southwestern souvenir of some kind.

It does have a kind of wood grain to it. I'm not sure of the feel of petrified wood but this feels like stone. it does appear to be cut by hand though?

Travertine is fairly soft and a steel knife blade will scratch it,petrified wood is quartz and a steel knife will not scratch it.The pits on the front side does not look like petrified wood.

Not petrified wood. Agree with Hollyblue and think it’s decorative and of minimal value.

I didn't think it was petrified wood. I wouldn't have assessed minimal value without not knowing what it is.

The fact that no one bothered to repair it, t’s got flea bites, is carved from a soft stone, and is unsigned is why I said that but beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I’ve seen items I’ve considered worthless go for ridiculous prices so you could be right. Hope you do well with it.

If you check the hardness it might lower the guesses.

It’s a soft stone and I will usually defer to Hollyblue on stone ID. Travertine makes sense to me.

Agree but wouldn’t the pits, etc. denote a softer stone that was hand carved?
    Mine didn’t LOL

Most stones can be "hand" carved, opal has a hardness of 5.5 – 6.5and can be easily be shaped in a pie pan with an abrasive stone and sand paper.

I tested this using a single edge razor I could actually shave the sides.

Travertine it is. It's the same stuff they make those Mexican souvenir necklaces out of. I think it has about the same hardness as schoolyard chalk.
