Hi I picked these interesting bookends up at my local thrift store today. I tried doing some research on them but couldnt find any other examples online. I'm not exactly sure who the woman is supposed to be or what it's made out of. I thought maybe white onyx? I think it's on a marble base unless the base is onyx too? Also what era? Ant info would be great thank you!

Given subject and material, Italy I'd think. But others may know better.

I'm thinking alabaster, not onyx. I'm not sure though.

At first glance I thought "giant thumb bookends!"

At second or third glance....Mother Mary?" Super streamlined alabaster.

The OP's is not onyx since onyx is black or banded black and white parallel layers.

I never thought it was. I only think it's too high of a sheen and appears too "hard" a surface to be made of alabaster.

I'm not sure it's not some sort of resin casting? @rink28 , what does it weigh? Could it be a resin casting of some sort? Lucite mixed with ::something:: ?? Way too shiny for alabaster, even when varnished/finished.
