    I didn't read INS' link about the history, so pardon me if I'm repeating or wrong.

    I think what you have is a cardboard suitcase from the 1930s, maybe early 40s.
    Your piece would have been the overnight case or for toiletries.
    As shown by SIS they came in varying sizes.

    A fairly common piece as it was affordable. Since they are made of cardboard, they aren't always in the best of shape.
