    Hi there,

I am having trouble identifying the date/style of leg on this chair/bench. Does anyone have an idea? The overall size of the chair is 55" high, 41" wide, 17" deep.

    Hi and welcome :)

Just a few questions, where are you located, where did you get the chair and how do you know it's 18th century? If you have any history on it that will help the furniture people here help you.

Hi Marie. Thanks for the welcome! I am located in Canada. I am afraid that I don't have any history on the piece. Just something I came across. I've not seen anything like it before - particularly legs that are straight with small paw feet. In fact, I don't know that it is 18C - just a suspicion. But, whatever the date, I do find it quite compelling and would be curious to know if anyone has seen anything of a similar style elsewhere.

Think this is a late Victorian pastiche of styles. Could even be a bit later, on in to the 20th century.

This looks 1920 or so.......even 19th century would likely have some worming. Carving looks machined where as in 18th century it would be hand worked. How flat is the backside? Have you turned the piece over to photograph the underside?

Yes, the back is completely flat. And there is a chip out of one corner. I've attached photos in case that helps. It looks like some kind of a mitre dowel joint. Notice the difference in wood colour - but the wood is dark right through the chip. That suggests age, no?

it's practical insofar as not needed to be against a wall, but could serve as a small room divider.

I think it is a late 1800s early 1900s, entry hall bench. Used somewhere that waiting was required.
I'm leaning more toward European than American.

    Very nice.

I'm with Laura on this one.....think it's 1920s, but continuing a conservative ecclesiastical tradition from decades before. Looks like it could have come from a church
