    Hi All!

I picked up these fun items at an auction. I’m by no means an expert in African Art (took a college class 20 yrs ago). So I was hoping for some help identifying this mask. I think it’s either Bobo or Bozo. What do you guys think? I can’t find anything very close to it (seems to. Be covered in leather) have you seen any?

I also picked up a gorgeous carved head— any thoughts on time period/region/artist are welcome!

Difficult to judge from a small photo, but the carved head could be Makonde, in which case not too old.

I know next to nothing about African masks, sorry.

I think the mask is west African, but it is not a traditional style so I can't attribute it to any particular group. The leather covering and woven elements are non-standard. I suspect it was made to appeal to tourists. Travelling now, but I might have more thoughts later.

Yes, I should have put "mask" in quotes. You can tell something about the intended use by looking at what provision has been made for hanging/displaying it. A single hole or hook at the top = wall hanger. Most African masks made for actual use have a series of holes around the rim for attaching cloth or fibers that would cover the dancer's body. The mask might be worn over the face, or on top of the head.
