Hi all, I got this christening mug from a charity shop where it was ticketed as sterling silver. The only mark on the base is Silver - it's been struck about 3 times none of them complete. From research I have seen the shape is described as Georgian style, but I'm unable to find anything similar that doesn't bear English hallmarks. It has been tested by my local antiques dealer as silver, but I noticed when photographing it, that there is a small mark on the bottom rim that looks like a layer has come off to reveal base metal. What are your thoughts? Thanks in advance. Very nice, Dory.
With a 'silver' mark, it is probably 20th century NZ, but made in a traditional style.
Could the discolouration be the result of acid testing by the antiques dealer? Some, errm, people put acid straight on silver, instead of using a testing stone.

The person who punched the 'silver' mark was drunk.:playful:

Personally, would guess this is from India, unlikely to be any earlier than mid 20th century - if so, solid silver of fairly high fineness is probable, and as mentioned, the spot from an acid-test (though 'mismarked' EPNS also possible)...
