What I do know. Purchased in New Orleans 15 years ago. Was told it was a "plantation desk". Used post civil war, each "sharecropper" had a drawer with own lock for ledger. So I was told. I liked it, price was cheap so I bought it.

Dovetails were hand cut, you can see the marks from the marking gauges. drawer bottoms were fit with hand planes etc.

    Thoughts?

Those handles don't really fit with the desk, as in the handle seems to overlap the lock.

    Does the top lift up?

I agree. The handles seem to have been added at some point. No, the top is fixed. Slanted, but fixed in place.

Think this may be a cut down clerk's or paymaster's desk circa 1860. Would think it should be just a bit taller. Locks and drawer pulls are later additions.
