We are cleaning out my husband's grandfather's house and need to sell some pieces. We have no idea if they're worth anything, nor what to ask if they are. We did identify the Willett pieces and have a decent idea of value on those, but these pieces we can't find any marks on. There is a chair that's really quite nice (Queen Anne style?) and a swan neck rocker with ottoman. Both pieces need to be reupholstered. Any info you could give me would be great!

The first is a walnut Victorian balloon back chair. Circa 1890, I would think. The second is probably from about 1940. Not a lot of value on either since they need upholstery. Here in the Midwest, you might get $10-15.00 for the first at auction or a thrift store. You might have to pay to have the second hauled away. No one really wants to do upholstery work any more and it is cost-prohibitive to have it done professionally. You might do better (or even worse) in other locations.

Thanks. Any idea what it would cost to reupholster that balloon back chair? I might keep it for my daughter's vanity if I thought I could get it done at a reasonable price.

Shop value on the balloon back chair, in its present condition, here in Northern CA would be about 35.
In my area, there is only one person who does upholstery and he is about 8 months out before getting to a new piece.

If you are one of those crafty people, this shouldn't be too hard to recover. You might want to get a book from the library, or check Youtube.

I am in southeastern MI, near Ann Arbor. I am a crafty person, so maybe I'll pull that chair apart a bit and see what they're doing. I've recovered seats before, though this one looked a bit more complicated.

    Thanks for all the info!
