    Hi everyone,
Could someone help me to identify this chair from a set that I have?
Should I post more photos from different angles?

Sorry the images aren't of great quality. I was using a computer camera not my usual camera. Thank you!

I was told these were French 18th century, but I don't know.
They have little wheels on the bottoms of each leg, and I don't know if these were put in after, for they seem to match.
    Thank you!

I made a mistake. The wheels are on the front legs only.

And all the chairs are all ornamented the same? With a lizard and scallop shell on the top rail?

All of the chairs are the same design, though some parts of individual chairs are chipped or missing.

Renaissance Revival ca. 1870s or so. Re-imagined after 17th century English prototypes. Part of a handsome dining room set. Each chair would probably bring less than $100 by itself.

    Love the lizard!!

Great! Does anyone have a different opinion, or does everyone agree?

Does anyone have an idea of the maker?
There aren't any labels of course.

I find the symbolism curious. Assuming it's religious. A lizard and a scallop shell? Uncleanliness and purity?

Not sure. Interesting combination, right? Does anyone know why someone would put those together on a chair?

    The wheels are called casters.

Agree with Ghopper. Nice chairs! $100.00 per chair in a set of at least 4 seems about right. Hard to get much more than that for any set here in the US unless you have a shop and the clientele to support it. Keep in mind that most sets don't sell for anywhere near that these days. These might actually do better at a specialized furniture auction ..... but then you have the risk, fees, transportation costs, etc.

That sounds just about right. Thanks everyone! verybrad, do you know why anyone would put the Salamander and the clam like thing together?

    Victorian whimsy?
The "clam" is probably a shell carving

    And it's not a clam, it's a scallop. ;)

Could have something to do with a family history or organizational symbols. Otherwise, pure carver's whimsy.
