I wonder if anyone can help identify this mark. It’s hard to photograph well but hopefully I’ve given enough to go on. Also not really sure what this piece of pottery even is! Thanks in advance :)

Welcome Asa. In which part of the world did you find it?

I cropped and tweaked the photo a bit. I see a triangle inside the circle and some letters.

Those appear to be screw holes. Some sort of insulator?

Thanks for the welcome ! We found this in an excavation of a Bosnian house in Israel, 1880-1948. I also think they’re screw holes and does seem to be related to heat :). I think below the triangle is AND and inside P or F and then A. Can’t really tell what’s on the top left or top right.

I’ll add that in the house we have pottery from all over Europe and far east of Asia as well as glass from NYC so it can be from anywhere.

Czech pottery? Czechia was part of the Austro-Hungarian empire until 1919, as was Bosnia. They traded early and often with the Middle-East too.

Do you mean thermal or electrical insulator? My initial thoughts were electrical. Like some sort of eletric pins or wires go through the holes. I think electricity was in use before the widespread production of plastics, so ceramics would be useful.

Electrical, and so it proved. My grandmother's house, sold in 1979, was built around 1915 and had those pushbutton light switches. A ceramic insulator like that would have fit right in.

That does look like the bottom element! So we have to see if we have the top metal part. If anyone is able to identify the mark that would be amazing- I think you are getting closer for sure. Thanks for all of your collective help ☺️☺️

Do you have any photos from different angles so we can see the text more clearly? Are the yellow parts a reflection or damage to the surface of the ceramic?

PS it is the backplate of a Bakelite fitting. If you Google bakelite light switch manufacturers, with combinations of those letters you might just get it.

Unfortunately I don’t have other angles and the piece is in storage. I’ll see what I can find online with the letters I think are there - AND below triangle and P or F and A inside triangle. The hunt continues…
