Hey, so I found this large preparatory painting for a ceiling fresco online. The artist and the original fresco are unknown, and so I'm curious to try and identify where the final piece (if there is one) is located. Any help??

How lovely ! Could be any gilded age mansion or public building. They were awfully fond of excess . :)

Well, isn't that an odd thing? The figure in green is dressed in late Victorian fashion so a gilded age mansion more likely.

Your dates are 1862 to 1933 for the canvas.

    Preparatory? Or student copy perhaps?

There is also a woman playing a violin behind the woman in green and another with a tambourine to her left.

One center top with a long horn. Maybe for a musical venue?

    I don't think that's a student work. It's a well executed cartoon.

Don’t know where it’s from, but it’s lovely, very much reminds me of the Louvre (*siiigh*)
EDIT: actually, looking it up Felix Duban and Eugene Delacroix didn’t finish the ceiling ‘til the mid 19th century. So this is contemporaneous with the ceiling?

EDIT 2: The Metropolitan Museum of Art has this pretty Delacroix cartoon, perhaps someone there would recognise your ceiling?

I would think it was a shield. This is much earlier but something like this.
