Featured Help Identifying this Rush Seat Ladder Back Chair

Discussion in 'Furniture' started by Heather Cantwell, Aug 26, 2019.

  1. I am trying to figure out how old this chair is, and possibly what kind of wood it is. I can't find any screws. Only nails and glue. Any info would be much appreciated! _MG_8323.jpg _MG_8323.jpg _MG_8334.jpg _MG_8330.jpg _MG_8328.jpg _MG_8327.jpg

Am anxious to hear from our experts. I, who have seen more of such chairs that I can begin to count, have never seen one quite like that with its little bow shapes...

  4. I am as well. I cannot find a single chair that even remotely looks like this.

Thanks AJ. A nice, tightly-constructed looking ladder back chair. Oak methinks. I'm getting an early mid-20th century feel; manufacturers could have made this starting in the 20s and up through the 40s. Never seen one quite like it. Not a big money item because chairs are in general are not big money items. A handsome example!

  7. Do you think it's from the US, or abroad?

Unusual stretchers in that they are front to back only.
Guesses oak, guesses french provincial/ country french, guesses 1st half 20th century.

European, almost certainly. The design and overall impression of precision seem German, but it could just as easily be French.

  10. I bought 4 chairs for $40. 2 armchairs and 2 side chairs. I'm also just wondering if they are valuable? Would it be a sin to paint them?

Agree with the above but doubt if much before 1940.

    Would not rule out English.

Not terribly but having a set certainly helps. Value really depends on market. Here in my semi-rural Midwest US location, these would be about $100.00 at retail. I could see them going for double that or more in a big city shop.

And 5 years from now someone will present this set here, in all its painted glory - looking for ideas on how to strip the #@*&$ off of them! :banghead:
