Help Identifying Which Family (Lot)

    Hello,

I recently purchased about 100 cabinet photos, tintypes etc.
    of the "Svenson" family.

They looked to have lived in NYC from about 1870-1890's

I'm trying to pin point which family they exactly are and was hoping someone with ancestry.com or another reference could help me figure out who they were.

    Gustav A. Svenson
    Emma L. Svenson

There are a couple other names in the album, but they are difficult to make out.
(Including the name on the last photo I've posted.)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Warm Regards,

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

I think the last name looks like G. A. Svenson.

I don't have time to look at this in depth right now... I hope somebody else will be along soon.

    Might look at 'Svensen' too...

In what borough of NYC were these taken, Scantic. I just got back from some errands, but I'll have some time this afternoon.

I think that's correct. I believe that is Gustav A. Svenson.
    But I'm not 100% certain.

Scantic - let me repeat my question - what borough of New York City were the photographers in - Manhattan, Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens or Staten Island (Richmond)?

I did find 2 photographers named Perkinson - but not at the 4th Avenue address I can see in your pictures. What about Borgardus? Can't see an address on that one at all.

Interesting... I wonder whether E. W. Bogardus was related to the famous NYC photographer Abraham Bogardus (1822-1908)?

Could the names dated 1890 be Mena Svenson and Selma C (or E) Ekman?

I've searched for all the names on ancestry, but it's complicated by there being so many variants. The most promising record I found was from the NY passenger lists for an Emma L Svenson who arrived in NY in 1884, age 23. But that doesn't fit with the date on the photo, assuming the date on the photo is the date it was taken.

Again, there are several Gustav(e) Svenson/Swenson's on the censuses for NY, but without other details it's difficult to know which (if any) is the correct one.

Perhaps you could post the names that are difficult to make out, to see if anyone can read them?

Well, after much searching, tweaking the search, searching again, etc. I may have found Gustav Augustus and Maria (not Mena) Svensen in 1900 and 1905 Census records living in New Rochelle, Westchester, NY (not far north of the city.) He was born 1849 in (possibly Karrsholm) Sweden and emigrated to NY in 1873. Maria was born in Germany about 1844. They married, probably in NY, in 1875. The only children I have found so far were Annie, born about 1876, and Matilda, born about 1878, both in New York. I still can't find Emma Svensen, but I did find a Selma Ekman with her husband Fred Ekman living in the Bronx in 1905. Perhaps the Svensens lived nearby before they moved out of the city.

Since there was no Emma living with these Svensens in 1900 or 1905, it's hard to say what her relationship was to them. Or frankly, whether I have even found the right people. It's been a tough slog trying to find a Gustav Svensen in any part of NYC who was 1) married and 2) was doing work that would have made him well enough off to be dressed the way our subject is. The Gustav I found was a milk dealer and well enough healed to have servants in the house.
