Help identifying wood type

Discussion in 'Furniture' started by James D Vaughn, Sep 25, 2021.

  1. This is an early 1900's dresser I'm refinishing. I'm terrible at telling wood types unless it's walnut. Can anyone help out from these pics? Thanks!!

Hard to tell from these pics but maybe ash.

Any more clues, like weight or whether it was painted? Looks to me like old pine ("deal" as they called it) . There is one pic on which the backboard's grain looks like it could be ash, but the frame looks more like pine.

  4. Well, it's somewhat heavy and it was painted an ugly drab brown. I'll post more pics as I get it stripped and sanded. It does have the two handkerchief drawers on top with a half slab of white marble. It also has a somewhat ornate rectangular mirror also. If anyone can help more I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!!

The last details you filled in are more characteristic of ca. 1880 Victorian walnut dressers. It’s not impossible- but very unlikely - that your piece is ash originally stained to loom like walnut.

Tough to tell by the photos, however, It looks like walnut to me.
